Description
This year’s Go by Bike Week will run May 31 – June 6. Previously known as Bike to Work/Bike to School Week, the campaign is designed to showcase cycling as a fun and useful mode of transportation with a ton of benefits, from lower GHG emissions to improved mental and physical health.
In past years Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows businesses have shown their support for cycling as an important method of transportation by encouraging their staff to participate.
With so many people discovering or re-discovering the joys of cycling over the past year, 2021 is shaping up to see extraordinary numbers take to the streets on two wheels during Go by Bike Week.
How businesses can participate
If you have several employees:
- You can form a team and nominate a Team Lead. HUB Cycling, the campaign sponsor, provides a terrific guide for team leads to help promote participation at your workplace.
- Register your team at btww.ca to track your kilometres, be entered to win great prizes, and see
how many greenhouse gas emissions you’ve saved together.
- Other ideas:
o Get together over lunch to participate in daily webinars on topics such as Intro to City Cycling and Cycling for Sustainable Cities.
o Host a celebratory breakfast at the end of the week for those who’ve been cycling to
work.
Even if you operate on your own, you can participate in Go by Bike Week. Your team can be family, friends, colleagues – or you can go solo! Sign up on the Hub Cycling website at btww.ca, check the schedule of events, and get ready to cycle. All bike trips count, whether it’s to work, to shop, run errands or just have fun. Log your trips to be entered for a chance to win cool prizes!
Why Go by Bike?
- Cycling for transportation lowers greenhouse gas emissions and reduces road congestion.
- Logged trips help us work with local leaders to improve cycling conditions.
- Biking improves our physical and mental health.
- It’s fun!

MOTHERLOAD documentary screening and panel discussion
MOTHERLOAD is a documentary on the joys of hauling around your kids – and everything else in the world – on a cargo bike.
The film follows director Liz Canning, whose experiences teach her that sustainability is not necessarily about compromise and sacrifice, and that there are few things more empowering in an age of consumption than the ability to create everything from what seems to be nothing.

The free screening runs from May 28 through May 30, with an online panel discussion the evening of May 31. The panel will feature Christian Cowley, Executive Director of the CEED
Centre Society, who runs the Velorganics youth employment program using an electric cargo trike; Jennie Wright from the Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows HUB Cycling chapter; and Erin O’Melinn, Executive Director of HUB Cycling.

Free WEBINAR - Cycling in Metro Vancouver suburbs: Barriers & Opportunities
To wrap up Go by Bike Week, HUB Cycling is presenting a bonus webinar on Monday, June 7, 12-1:00 p.m. on the need for safe cycling infrastructure in our suburban communities.
Presenter Kay Teschke, Ph.D. (Professor Emeritus, University of British Columbia School of Population and Public Health) will offer some of her valuable insights into the cycling infrastructure needed to make people of all ages and abilities feel safe.
As the City of Maple Ridge has begun to update its 20-year Transportation Plan and is asking residents for their input, this webinar offers a great opportunity for both decision makers and residents of our communities to learn how our streets can be made safer for cycling.
