The City of Pitt Meadows Recognizes Red Dress Day

The City of Pitt Meadows recognizes the importance of acknowledging and honoring the missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls (MMIWG) in Canada. On May 5th, 2023, the City of Pitt Meadows marked Red Dress Day, an annual event that raises awareness and shows support for this critical issue.

The REDress Project, which began in 2010 by Metis artist Jaime Black, displays empty red dresses as a symbol of the MMIWG. The colour red is significant because it represents the bloodshed of these women and girls. The installation aims to raise awareness of this issue and honor the lives of those who are no longer with us.

The City of Pitt Meadows recognized Red Dress Day by displaying red dresses throughout the city, including in public areas, parks, and municipal buildings. The City also shared information about the REDress Project on their website and social media channels to raise awareness and encourage community engagement.

Mayor MacDonald posted a heartfelt message on her Facebook about the event, pictured with several young indigenous women, men, and children participating in the event. She is quoted saying "We honour and recognize the many lives that have been lost at the hands of violence."

By recognizing Red Dress Day, the City of Pitt Meadows is taking an important step towards reconciliation and understanding the impact of the ongoing violence against Indigenous women and girls. This gesture demonstrates the City's commitment to supporting and advocating for Indigenous communities and recognizing their contributions and sacrifices.

It is important that we continue to raise awareness of this issue and show our support for Indigenous communities. We must recognize and acknowledge the harm that has been inflicted upon Indigenous peoples and work towards reconciliation. As a community, we can all play a role in advancing reconciliation efforts by learning about the history and experiences of Indigenous peoples and supporting their rights and interests.

The City of Pitt Meadows encourages everyone to learn more about the REDress Project and take action to support the MMIWG. Let us continue to work together to build a more just and equitable future for all.
