British Columbia (BC) is currently facing a severe labour shortage that poses challenges for both employers and job seekers. As employers struggle to find suitable workers, it has become imperative for them to adapt to the needs and expectations of job seekers in order to attract and retain talent. On the other hand, despite numerous employment opportunities, job seekers are finding it difficult to secure employment. Recognizing the urgency to build a resilient and robust labour force, the BC Chamber of Commerce has embarked on a groundbreaking project aimed at addressing the labour market gap and fostering innovative employment practices. This blog post provides an overview of the project and invites readers to participate in shaping the future of BC's workforce.
 
Building Capacity and Resilience:
The BC Chamber of Commerce, in collaboration with various stakeholders, has identified the development of labour force capacity and resilience as a top priority. This recognition stems from the shared concerns of Chamber members across the province. To effectively address the challenges faced by both employers and job seekers, the project aims to gain a comprehensive understanding of their needs and aspirations, paving the way for appropriate solutions and informed decision-making regarding program and public policy in BC.
 
Phase 1: Addressing the Labour Market Gap Survey:
To lay the foundation for the project, a comprehensive survey titled "Addressing the Labour Market Gap" was conducted between February 7 and March 3, 2023. The survey gathered insights from 812 employers and 1225 job seekers, providing a valuable snapshot of the current state of the labour market in BC. The Chamber of Commerce extends its gratitude to all the individuals who participated in this crucial phase. The findings of this survey are now available in the Addressing the Labour Market Gap Insights Report, published in May 2023.
 
Phase 2: Engagement and Solution-Building:
The project is currently in its second phase, which commenced in April 2023 and will continue until January 2024. In this phase, the BC Chamber of Commerce will foster ongoing engagement with its network, industry and professional associations, as well as WorkBC and human resource organizations. By collaborating with these stakeholders, the project aims to explore potential solutions to the labour shortage and stimulate innovation in employment practices. This phase presents an opportunity for all interested parties to contribute their expertise and perspectives, ensuring that the resulting solutions are comprehensive and effective.
