New Supportive Housing could be built in Maple Ridge in 2023

Coast Mental Health's newly hired CEO, Keir Macdonald, says the new building on 224th and Fraser Street could be built quickly, as the building itself is pre-fabricated. This housing will be four stories high and will be replacing the temporary modular housing on Royal Crescent.

Delays due COVID-19 prevented residents from moving in during the summer of 2022. Macdonald is optimistic that the units will be completed this year. The modular housing on Royal Crescent is well past it's life span and was a temporary solution to the Anita Place Tent city.

The new building will offer housing and supports for 52 people who are at risk or are experiencing houseless lifestyles.

Keir Macdonald has said Maple Ridge is an important city for Coast Mental Health, as it operates Alouette Heights, Royal Crescent and Garibaldi Ridge. This is a combined 150 units with support services. They will be operating the new site as well as the city's extreme weather shelter.

The new CEO has come to the society as the organization is facing scrutiny for how the Royal Crescent modular housing has been operated. A third-party review was ordered by the province in March of 2022, after a list of residents who died at the housing was released to the public. While they're waiting for the report, Macdonald states that he believes the process will help the organization improve service to it's clients.
