Ridge Meadows Chamber Urges Local Support as New U.S. Tariffs Take Effect
The Ridge Meadows Chamber of Commerce is calling on local businesses and consumers to rally behind Canadian-made products and services in response to new U.S. tariffs that took effect last night. The tariffs, which impact a range of industries, are expected to increase costs for businesses and consumers, adding further strain to an already challenging economic environment.
By shifting purchasing habits to locally sourced goods and services, consumers can help mitigate the economic effects of these tariffs and ensure the sustainability of the local business community.
Statement from Ridge Meadows Chamber CEO, Kristi Maier:
"Disappointment is an understatement when it comes to the tariffs going into effect today. As a country, we stand for collaboration, unity, and working together—this decision goes against everything we believe in.
Now, more than ever, we must stand strong and support our local economy. It’s essential that we prioritize buying Canadian goods to send a clear message that we do not take this decision lightly. The Chamber is proud to collaborate with the City of Maple Ridge and the Downtown Maple Ridge Business Improvement Association on the Choose Maple Ridge campaign. We must raise our local flag high and stand together.
While some may feel anger and others uncertainty, this is our opportunity to demonstrate resilience. The Ridge Meadows Chamber is here to support every business in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows—we are your ally, your voice, and your advocate. Together, we will navigate these challenges and emerge stronger."
Statement from Ridge Meadows Chamber President, Jerry Kok:
"As the Chamber of Commerce, we are deeply disappointed with today’s announcement of U.S.-imposed tariffs on Canadian goods. Standing united with the cities of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, along with our business community, we strongly advocate for supporting and shopping local. This is a crucial moment for us to come together—as Canadians, businesses, and individuals—to strengthen our economy by making conscious purchasing choices that help minimize the impact of the Trump administration's position and sustain the viability of our businesses.
Over the past few years, business owners have faced many challenges, from COVID to supply chain issues, to staffing shortages, and now, these newly imposed tariffs. Amid these obstacles, the Ridge Meadows Chamber of Commerce remains unwavering in its commitment to the business community. We will continue to serve as a resource, champion local businesses, and advocate for all those affected by today’s announcement."
The Chamber is working closely with its members to provide guidance on how to navigate the new tariffs and will continue to advocate for policies that protect and strengthen the local economy.
Recent survey results from local businesses indicate that many already feel the pressure of these tariffs. Most respondents anticipate increased costs for imported goods and materials, leading to higher prices for customers and potential supply chain disruptions. While some businesses have mitigation plans in place, many are unsure of how to respond and are seeking guidance and resources. Additionally, businesses have expressed a strong need for advocacy at the local and provincial levels, information sessions on tariff impacts, and financial guidance to navigate this challenging period.
