Ridge Meadows Chamber Responds to BC Minimum Wage Increase
The Ridge Meadows Chamber is responding to the Province of British Columbia’s announcement that the general minimum wage will rise from 17.85 to 18.25 per hour on June 1, 2026. The increase is tied to the province’s average inflation rate from the previous year and is part of the government’s annual adjustment process intended to help wages keep pace with the rising cost of living.
Local employers across Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows continue to face significant financial pressures, including the recent expansion of the PST and ongoing increases to operational costs. Many businesses are still working to regain stability after several years of economic uncertainty, and additional mandated cost increases compound the challenges they face.
Kristi Maier, CEO of the Ridge Meadows Chamber, shared the following statement:
“While we recognize how important it is to ensure workers are paid fairly and can keep up with the rising cost of living, businesses in our community are already under significant financial pressure, even before this newly announced minimum wage increase takes effect in June. With the recent expansion of the PST and other rising costs, this announcement adds yet another layer of uncertainty and strain for employers who are working hard just to stay afloat.
As a rapidly growing Chamber that advocates for the business community of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, we urge the BC Government to take a step back and fully consider the cumulative impact these changes are having on businesses. Our local employers are the backbone of our economy, they create jobs, support families, and invest in our communities. It is critical that their sustainability and success remain a priority.”
The Ridge Meadows Chamber will continue to advocate for a balanced approach that supports both workers and employers. Ensuring that wage increases do not unintentionally hinder business viability, job creation, or local economic growth remains a key priority. The Chamber will continue to engage with government partners, share the concerns of local employers, and work toward solutions that strengthen the economic health of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows.
