B.C. Has 25,000 New Jobs - All While Small Businesses Close
With excitement on the rise for the official FIFA World Cup kick-off, every municipality across BC is looking forward to an expected economic boost with watch parties, specialized retail, and so much more planned for the series. But the overall climate for small business in BC is worsening.
Statistics Canada’s Labour Force survey presented a positive outcome for new jobs last month, with BC bringing 25,000 new jobs. However, it was masking the fact that many sectors saw a continued drop in employment totals and small businesses are closing faster than they are opening across the province. The retail industry saw a loss of 2,200 jobs and BC saw a net total loss of 29,600 jobs.
According to the BC legislative director of Independent Business, Ryan Mitton, between September 2024 and August 2025, more small businesses closed than opened over the course of four straight quarters. The amount of small business owners fell once again in May, and job growth is failing to keep up.
While major events such as the World Cup and attracting investment through projects like LNG Canada Phase 2 will help the business community, the overall sentiment from business owners has not been positive.
“Right now, the climate for business across our province is incredibly challenging”, says Kristi Maier, CEO of the Ridge Meadows Chamber of Commerce. “We’re feeling that here in Ridge Meadows just as strongly. Many of our local businesses are struggling and there is a growing concern that the current actions from the provincial government are not only falling short, but in some cases moving things in the wrong direction." A clear example of this is the new PST changes coming into effect in October, which are adding further pressure at a time when businesses need relief, not more costs.
“Last week, I had the opportunity to attend the BC Chamber AGM and conference alongside our President, Jerry Kok. The level of policy work and collaboration happening across the province through our chamber network is impressive. Chambers are coming together with thoughtful, informed solutions that reflect what businesses are actually experiencing on the ground. Now we need government to listen. Our business community needs meaningful support and practical solutions. It’s time for that voice to be heard, loud and clear.”
